We arrived at the store around 3:30 PM. We went inside, and there was no one there. While we were there, we found the four kitchen appliances we wanted, wrote down the model numbers, and made our selections.
Then I noticed that other customers had been there before us and had also left notes. As we were placing our note in the same spot, two Hispanic women came in. We told them, “There is no one in the store. We already wrote down the items we want to order.”
One of the women then called the store owner, put the phone on speaker, and handed it to me. I said, “We came to your store to shop, but the door was unlocked. You may have forgotten to lock it.”
After they spoke to each other in Spanish, one of the women took a photo of us—as if we were criminals. When I asked, “Why did you take our picture?” she denied doing it. I assume the store owner had asked her to.
We are a married couple, both pursuing PhDs. Being treated like suspects in a store we entered simply to shop was humiliating and unacceptable.
After we left, we became concerned that if anything happened in the store afterward, we might somehow be blamed. Because of that, we called 911. The dispatcher told us it was not an emergency and simply advised us to leave the store if the owner was not there.
What a bizarre experience. I wanted to document it here as well. This was an absolutely terrible customer service experience.
